It kicks off tenderly, with the deity placing his hand next to a golden handprint on an old tree. The opening scene of Santa Monica Studios' God of War shows us right away that Kratos isn’t the horny, god-killing motherfucker that he used to be. And because we are there, playing as Kratos, we are forced to confront that toxicity head on this time too. We know Kratos is unredeemable as a character, but instead of dwelling in the bland depression of a broken father, the game is action-oriented, offering lessons of mercy and emotional honesty every step of the way. But unlike the unironic masculine sadness dominating every frame of these sci-fi powerhouse movies, the developers at Santa Monica Studio have imbued Kratos, and the new game itself, with a refreshing sense of self-awareness.
